First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Hammer Rip’D Pearl is a technically fascinating ball that breaks with convention. Instead of being polished to a high gloss like most pearl balls, this one comes out of the box with a factory finish of 3000 grit Abralon. That matte surface on the Aggression Pearl CFI shell gives the Blue/Gold/Light Blue color scheme a look that doesn't sparkle but signals "business." Inside works the asymmetric Rip’D core, which delivers very low, rev-friendly numbers with a 2.48 RG and a 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs). One unique feature is the CFI technology (Carbon Fiber Infused), in which carbon fiber has been worked into both the cover and the outer core. This not only serves durability (Hammer offered a 3-year warranty on it), but according to the manufacturer also improves energy transfer into the pins.
Comparison
Compared to the Hammer Rip’D Solid, the pearl version is predictably cleaner through the heads, but thanks to the 3000 finish it is nowhere near as slippery as classic "shiny pearls." It reads the lane earlier than, for example, a polished Hammer Black Widow Gold and offers a more controlled, less abrupt reaction at the breakpoint. Set against the original Rip’D (a hybrid, which was polished), the pearl comes across as almost more stable in the midlane, since the rougher surface keeps it from sliding in the oil. It behaves more like a "strong pearl" in the vein of a Storm Physix (which came later), providing length without reacting touchily to streaks of oil. It is the golden middle ground: more backend than the solid, but more traction than the hybrid.
On the Lanes
Because of its matte pearl surface, the Rip’D Pearl is not a choice for dry lanes; it feels most at home on medium to heavy oil patterns. It is ideal for the situation where a pure solid ball would start up too early but a shiny ball still slides too far (over/under reaction). The 3000 finish helps the ball make the transition from oil to dry in a smooth manner. It is perfect if you want to open up the pocket but prefer a rounder arc instead of a sharp break. Should the ball roll too early, it polishes up beautifully to turn it into a classic "skid-flip" monster, which increases its versatility enormously.
