First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Hammer Diesel Torque brings back one of the brand's most reliable names, this time with a focus on traction and control. Inside works the proven symmetrical Diesel core, which shows a medium to high RG of 2.51 and a healthy differential of 0.046 (at 15 lbs). These core numbers provide good length and a very continuous motion. The decisive component, however, is the Juiced Solid Reactive coverstock in a striking blue/black/orange color scheme. Unlike many balls in this price range, the Diesel Torque comes out of the box with a coarse 500/2000 Abralon finish. As is usual with Hammer, the Carbon Fiber Outer Core technology is built in here as well, which not only provides extreme durability (and made the 3-year warranty possible) but also increases the hitting power in the pins.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Hammer Diesel Pearl, which was known for its length and quick backend reaction, the Torque behaves completely differently. Because of the dull solid surface, the Torque reads the lane considerably earlier (in the midlane area) and smooths out the reaction at the breakpoint. It is less "jumpy" and offers a gentler arc. Drawing an external comparison, the Diesel Torque strongly recalls the legendary Ebonite Game Breaker 2. It is a classic symmetrical solid ball: not as aggressive as a high-end ball (e.g. Black Widow or Rip'D Solid), but noticeably stronger and earlier than entry-level balls like the Vibe. It fills the gap for "controlled traction" in the mid price range.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Diesel Torque is the epitome of a "benchmark ball" for the typical league bowler. It shines on medium oil patterns, where it offers an excellent balance between traction and energy retention. It is the perfect choice as a first ball to read the lane: it shows where the oil is without sliding unpredictably, and shows where the dry is without over-reacting off the spot. It is especially effective at taking the edge off "over/under" (wet/dry) conditions, since it makes the transition from oil to friction softer. If you have a very high rev rate, it is often enough as a "heavy oil" option on house patterns, while for bowlers with less wrist action it provides the necessary security that the ball will not slide through the breakpoint.
