First Impressions
The DV8 Turmoil Solid was introduced in May 2018 alongside the pearl version and represents the more aggressive half of that duo. Visually, the ball comes in a plain but functional color combination of black, blue and white. At the center of it all sits the symmetrical Turmoil Core, which in a 15-pound ball shows a 2.528 RG and a 0.042 differential. These core numbers are geared toward a controlled energy release that gets the ball rolling early enough to provide stability through the midlane. The surface consists of the Composite Hook Solid Reactive coverstock, dulled at the factory to a 500/4000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. This matte texture creates noticeably more friction on the oil film than polished models and sets the ball up to read the oil pattern actively already in the middle part of the lane.
Comparison Compared to the DV8 Turmoil Pearl, the Turmoil Solid shows a considerably earlier reaction and a distinctly rounder, more continuous overall motion. Where the pearl version skids through the heads and only reacts angularly in the backend, the Solid starts working in the middle of the lane and thus reduces the risk of shooting past the breakpoint. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Turmoil Solid lines up as a slightly weaker but equally controlled benchmark option. The Phaze II generally offers more total hook, while the Turmoil Solid stays clean a touch longer thanks to its 4000 grit before it starts its arcing move into the pocket. Compared to the Brunswick Rhino, the Turmoil Solid offers vastly more traction and is suited to considerably higher oil volumes. Next to the Hammer Web Solid, the Turmoil Solid feels somewhat softer in the last phase of the lane, which makes it an excellent choice if you're looking for a predictable reaction on medium oil without being surprised by an overly sharp backend snap.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the DV8 Turmoil Solid is on medium to slightly heavy oil patterns. Thanks to its matte surface and symmetrical core, it is a classic benchmark ball that helps you size up the lane conditions quickly. It works excellently to start a set on a fresh house shot, since it offers the traction needed to pull through the oil steadily without reacting uncontrollably in the pocket. If you throw the ball fast, you'll appreciate the extra friction of the solid cover, since it helps you get the ball into its hook phase in time. For rev-dominant players it's a safe tool for controlling the heads and holding a consistent line. Once the transition sets in and the front part of the lane dries up, however, the Turmoil Solid can begin to lose too much energy in the midlane, which can lead to weaker carry. At that point, switching to the Turmoil Pearl is the logical next step. All in all, the Turmoil Solid delivers reliable, professional performance for bowlers who value control and a clean read of the lane.
