First Impressions
The DV8 Pitbull was released in January 2017 as the most aggressive ball in DV8's history up to that point. Visually, the ball already warns of its bite with a striking color combination of Violet, Lime and Black Solid. Technically, DV8 relies here on the massive Pitbull Low RG Asymmetric Core. In the 15-pound version, this core delivers an extremely low RG of 2.486, a very high differential of 0.055 and a strong intermediate differential of 0.020. These numbers are designed to get the ball into rotation as early as physically possible. This powerhouse is wrapped in the Composite Bite Solid coverstock, which comes out of the box with a very coarse 500/1000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. This combination of low RG, high asymmetry and rough surface serves a single purpose: maximum traction in oil and the earliest possible hook.
Comparison To put the immense strength of the DV8 Pitbull in perspective, it has to be compared to other heavyweights for oily lanes. Against its direct predecessor, the DV8 Grudge, the Pitbull offers even more overall hook and a noticeably earlier reaction. While the Grudge occasionally acted a bit softer at the breakpoint, the Pitbull digs in immediately as soon as it feels friction. Compared to the Radical Cash, which came out at the same time, the Pitbull often plays a tick more aggressively in the heads and digs deeper into the oil, which makes it more effective on extreme floods. Compared to a Storm Alpha Crux, the Pitbull shows a somewhat different bite thanks to its Composite technology; it often feels "toothier" and less prone to hydroplaning on very long oil, but gives up some of the backend snap the Crux can still generate at times.
On the Lanes The DV8 Pitbull is a specialized tool for the heaviest oil conditions and long sport patterns. It works like a "snow plow," cutting through the thickest oil and creating traction where other balls only skid. If you throw the ball fast, it is often the only option to get the ball rolling early enough and to achieve an effective entry angle into the pocket. On typical house shots it is generally too strong: it would burn up its energy too early and arrive at the pins without power (burn out), which leads to poor carry. Its ideal use is as the first ball out of the bag on a fresh, heavy oil pattern. Once the lane breaks down over the course of a tournament and the heads dry up, a switch to weaker balls such as the DV8 Vandal or Diva is a must, since the Pitbull then loses its line and is barely controllable.
