First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Beast Black Pink Purple presents itself as the reintroduced Beast line with new bright colors and upgrades. The striking color combination of black, pink, and purple makes this ball a real eye-catcher on the lane. Technically, it builds on proven fundamentals: inside works the new Beast symmetrical light-bulb-shaped core, similar to the original Beast, with a 2.54 RG and a 0.033 differential in the 15-pound ball. The cover is the Bend-It Hybrid Reactive coverstock, finished with 500 Siaair/Crown Factory Compound/Crown Factory Polish. This combination should deliver a skid/flip reaction on lightly oiled lanes.
Comparison
Compared to other entry-level options, the Beast stands out through its particular characteristics. The ball reads the midlane relatively strongly for a polished ball with a higher RG, which sets it apart from classic entry-level balls. While the Columbia 300 Chaos is designed more for beginners, the Beast offers considerably more performance in the mid price segment. Compared to the Columbia 300 Messenger, it shows a very smooth and predictable ball motion with its light-bulb weight block and a simple layout. The Bend-It Pearl surface is the strongest cover ever used on a Beast, which makes it noticeably more reactive than earlier versions of the Beast line.
On the Lanes
The Beast Black Pink Purple is an excellent fit if you're looking for a reliable ball for house shot conditions. The Beast was developed for light oil conditions and responds well when it sees friction. The traditional higher RG, medium differential light-bulb shape makes it ideal if you need length and a controlled backend hook. On typical house shots it is very clean and very angular at the end of the lane. Particularly noteworthy is how well it drives through the pins and how much more forgiveness it offers than you would expect from an LMP bowling ball. At medium oil volumes the Beast was still playable when going straighter up the lane, sacrificing only a bit of hitting power. It can be the first ball out of the bag, and sometimes the only ball out of the bag.
