First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Savage Life, released in March 2019, is the logical pearl extension of the original Savage and brings a visually striking look to the lanes. The ball stands out with a vivid color combination of lime, silver and black that shines brightly thanks to the factory 500/1000 Abralon finish followed by polish (Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish). Technically, Columbia 300 sticks with the successful Savage Core. At 15 lbs, this asymmetric core delivers a low 2.49 RG, a high 0.051 differential and an intermediate differential of 0.016. Those numbers signal a ball that wants to rev up early. The real story, though, is the shell: it uses the Exciter Pearl coverstock, additionally enhanced with Hypershock Technology. This viscoelastic technology in the outer material should optimize energy transfer at impact with the pins and minimize deflection. The combination of a very rev-happy, low RG core and a clean pearl cover suggests a ball reaction that doesn't simply skid a long way, but already builds traction in the midlane (revs up) before responding explosively to the friction at the end of the pattern.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Columbia 300 Savage (solid), the Savage Life is noticeably cleaner through the heads. Where the original Savage grabs the lane early with its matte solid surface and produces a smooth, arcing motion, the Savage Life uses the polish to store energy. It responds considerably faster and more angularly at the breakpoint than its predecessor. Set against another heavyweight from the Ebonite International portfolio of that era, the Hammer Black Widow Gold, you'll see parallels in the skid/flip characteristic. That said, with its extremely low RG (2.49) compared to the Gas Mask core of the Black Widow (2.50 RG), the Savage Life often seems to want to enter the roll phase a bit earlier, which makes it more controllable when the oil is distributed somewhat unevenly. Against a symmetric pearl ball like the Ebonite Game Breaker 3 Pearl, the Savage Life offers far more torque at the breakpoint thanks to its asymmetry and is able to recover more aggressively from deeper angles. It is less rounded than a Track Paradox Pearl, but in exchange gives you a more defined change of direction.
On the Lanes
The Columbia 300 Savage Life is an excellent ball for medium to heavier oil patterns once the lane starts to transition. It is often not the first choice on completely fresh, flat oil, since the polished surface can react too sensitively to speed mistakes there (over/under). It shows its true strength once the heads have been played in a bit and you're forced to move left. Here the Savage Core with its low RG helps get the ball into rotation early enough that it doesn't skid past the breakpoint, while the pearl shell retains enough energy to drive powerfully through the pins. The Hypershock Technology is especially noticeable in carry; the ball holds its line through the pin deck extremely well and often sends pins flying low. It's ideal if you like to open up the angle and play "around the corner" but need the security of a strong core that doesn't die in the oil. For extremely dry lanes, however, it is usually too strong and too jumpy.
