First Impressions
The Columbia 300 Impulse, released in October 2016, brings high-performance technology to the mid-price segment (Orange Line). Visually, the ball stands out with its shiny cover in Red and Purple Pearl, which catches the eye immediately on the shelf. The technical highlight is hidden on the inside: for the first time, Hypershock Technology, previously reserved for the high-end balls, has been integrated into the outer core to maximize energy transfer to the pins. At the heart sits the symmetrical Impulse Core with a low RG of 2.49 and a high differential of 0.050 (at 15 lbs). This dynamic core is wrapped in the Reflex Hybrid coverstock. The factory finish (500/1000 Abralon with Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish) provides clean skid through the heads along with strong backend potential.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Ebonite Game Breaker 2 MVP, which is also considered a hybrid benchmark in this segment, the Impulse often shows a more aggressive move at the breakpoint thanks to its higher differential (0.050 versus 0.048). While the GB2 MVP is known for its smooth, controlled character, the Impulse delivers more "pop" off the backend and feels more dynamic. Compared with the Columbia 300 Sideswipe, the Impulse offers considerably more overall hook and covers more boards. Against a pure pearl ball like the Track Heat, the Impulse reads the midlane a bit earlier and more reliably thanks to its hybrid content, but still provides enough length not to burn up in the front part of the lane.
On the Lanes
The Columbia 300 Impulse is an excellent choice for medium oil and typical house shots. It works as an ideal "step-down" from stronger solid balls: when the heads dry up a bit and aggressive balls hook too early, the Impulse provides the length needed without looking weak at the end of the pattern. Thanks to the Hypershock Technology in the core, it punishes slight inaccuracies less harshly and keeps the pins flat, which noticeably improves carry. It is especially effective if you want to open up the pocket but need a ball that responds quickly and definitely to friction instead of rolling lazily.
