First Impressions
The Hammer Black Widow Red Legend Solid stands out with its striking, all-over Red Solid design. Inside works the legendary asymmetric Gas Mask core with a 2.500 RG, a massive 0.058 differential and a 0.016 intermediate differential. For the surface, Hammer relies on the Juiced Solid cover, finished out of the box with a 500 and 2000 Abralon prep. These specs should ensure that the ball builds massive traction and aims for an incredibly strong, aggressive asymmetric reaction. The cover bites extremely hard into the boards.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Hammer Black Widow Red Legend Pearl version, the Solid shows noticeably more stable ball motion through the heads, delivers drastically more traction in oil and a much earlier reaction at the breakpoint. Against the Storm Alpha Crux, the Red Legend Solid offers an extremely similar, massive hook thanks to its asymmetric design. Once transition changes the lane and dry spots appear, the rough surface of the Red Legend Solid burns up energy quickly. It reacts enormously on fresh oil, but loses its punch on dry conditions.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Black Widow Red Legend Solid is most at home on heavy lane conditions. It's an excellent option if you're looking for strong, aggressive ball motion when the lanes are heavily oiled. The asymmetric core creates a strong, massive angle at the breakpoint, which builds confidence when you're playing deep lines. The ball should secure carry through its brutal entry into the pocket. On very dried-up patterns, however, it burns up its energy too quickly.
