First Impressions
The Storm Alpha Crux shows up in a menacing Black, Solid Turquoise and Violet color combination. At the center works the massive asymmetric Catalyst Core, which comes with a 2.500 RG, a strong 0.052 differential and a 0.017 intermediate differential. This core is wrapped in the extremely strong GI-16 Solid Reactive coverstock, finished with a dull 2000 grit Abralon surface. These specs position the Alpha Crux as the ultimate high-performance ball for huge amounts of oil. The strong asymmetric core in combination with the rough cover should make the ball grab brutally early.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the Storm Crux Pearl, which has a smooth shell, the Alpha Crux shows a drastically earlier and rounder reaction at the breakpoint. Compared to the Storm Phaze II, the Alpha Crux behaves even more dominantly in the midlane. Once the transition sets in during a block and friction on the outside boards increases, the extreme solid surface loses usable energy extremely fast. It absolutely requires a massive oil base in the front part of the lane.
On the Lanes
The Storm Alpha Crux was developed specifically for use on heavily oiled and long lane conditions. It allows you to generate the hook needed to cross boards effectively even under the most difficult conditions. The pronounced asymmetric core should optimize carry through a consistent entry angle into the pocket. For dry or medium conditions, however, this ball is completely overqualified; it burns up its energy too early.
