First Impressions
The Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane, often simply called the "Purple Hammer" and originally released in October 2016, represents a significant step forward in the urethane bowling ball segment. Visually, the ball comes in a striking violet pearl color that makes it instantly recognizable on the lane. Technically, this model is built around the proven LED core in a symmetrical design, engineered specifically for controlled ball motion. At 15 pounds, the core carries an RG (radius of gyration) of 2.650 and a differential of 0.015. This combination of a very high RG and a low differential is atypical for many modern high-performance balls, but here it serves a precise purpose: the high RG helps the ball get cleanly through the heads without losing energy too early. The cover consists of a thick urethane pearl formulation. Unlike classic solid urethane balls, which often look dull and rough, the Purple Pearl ships from the factory with a 500/1000/2000 Siaair Micro Pad finish. This surface prep gives the ball a light sheen and provides the crucial length through the first third of the lane. The combination of the LED core and the pearl urethane shell aims to close the gap between traditional urethane and reactive resin balls. Right from the first shot, the ball conveys a sense of stability without pulling the aggressive "brake" familiar from older urethane models.
Comparison
Compared directly with what was arguably its strongest competitor at the time, the Pitch Black from Storm, clear differences in ball reaction emerge. While the Pitch Black (a solid urethane) tends to read very early and describe an extremely round, almost immediate curve, the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane generates more length. The pearl additive in the cover means the Purple Pearl picks up friction in the heads and midlane somewhat later than its Storm counterpart. This results in a visible difference in shape: the Hammer ball retains more energy for the backend and thus creates a more defined arc into the pocket instead of rolling out flat. Compared with reactive balls for dry lanes, such as the Hy-Road Pearl from Storm or the Rhino from Brunswick, the Purple Pearl Urethane offers a considerably smoother reaction on dry boards. With a lot of friction, reactive balls often tend toward overreaction or a "jump" at the end of the oil pattern. The Purple Pearl, by contrast, smooths that motion out. Internally it also differs sharply from Hammer's Black Widow Urethane. The Black Widow uses the asymmetrical Gas Mask core, which generates far more flare (track flare). The symmetrical LED core of the Purple Pearl, on the other hand, is designed to minimize flare, which makes controlling the pocket under difficult conditions dramatically easier. It is therefore considered more versatile than pure solid urethane balls, since it can still be played effectively once the lane has gone through some transition and oil has been carried down into the back ends.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane is short to medium oil patterns as well as lanes with a broken-down or dry surface. It plays to its strengths particularly on so-called short patterns or sport patterns, where the friction zone is very defined. It allows you to attack the outside boards more aggressively without having to fear an uncontrollable overreaction. If you have a high rev rate, especially as a two-hander, this ball often functions as a "safety net." It tames the hook on the lane and keeps the ball from going through the nose immediately on a less-than-clean shot. But strokers and players with a more moderate rev rate also benefit on dry house shots. When conventional reactive balls hook too much and lose control of the entry angle, the Purple Pearl provides the necessary damping. One outstanding feature here is carry: despite the controlled urethane characteristics, the LED core ensures the pins are mixed energetically, which can often be a weak point with urethane. The ball should be the choice when the lane reacts wet/dry — that is, plenty of oil in the middle and everything dry outside. Here the Purple Pearl blends out the transition and makes the path to the pocket more predictable. It should be noted, however, that on very long patterns or very high oil volume the ball may not build enough traction; stronger solid versions or aggressive reactive resin would be preferable there. In summary, it is a tool for control and precision that forgives mistakes in ball speed and at release better than most reactive balls.
