First Impressions
The Storm Code Black, released in November 2016, is considered one of the most distinctive balls in the Premier Line. Visually it stands out with its two-tone geometric pattern in Black and Grey Pearl, which looks almost hypnotic as the ball rolls down the lane (accompanied by the Candied Peppermint scent). Technically, Storm combines two giants here: the extremely strong asymmetric RAD4 Core and the proven R2S Pearl Reactive coverstock. With a 2.50 RG, a very high 0.058 differential and a 0.020 intermediate differential (at 15 lbs), the core has massive torque. The factory 1500-grit polished finish makes the ball glide extremely cleanly through the heads, while the numbers inside promise enormous backend potential. This combination points to a top-tier classic skid/snap reaction.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the Storm Snap Lock, which is also an asymmetric pearl ball (R3S cover), the Code Black goes a touch longer thanks to the R2S shell and responds to friction noticeably faster and with more angle at the breakpoint. While the Snap Lock reads a bit earlier and looks rounder, the Code Black generates an almost right-angled change of direction. Compared to the legendary Storm Hy-Road (same R2S cover, but symmetric), the Code Black offers the same clean feel through the heads, but covers considerably more boards thanks to the RAD4 core and creates significantly more flare. Next to a Roto Grip No Rules Pearl, the Code Black often comes across as even livelier and more dynamic on the pin deck, which makes it a favorite for steep angles.
On the Lanes
The Code Black is the ultimate solution for medium to heavy oil, especially once the lane "breaks down" and transition sets in. It specializes in playing deep angles: you can move well inside and send the ball far right, trusting that it will come back hard off the dry outside boards. It stores its energy extremely efficiently and delivers explosive carry when it hits the pocket. On fresh, long oil it is often too slick (risk of over/under), but as soon as the heads offer a little something to grab, it is hard to beat. It lets you widen your zone, since it compensates for misses in with the strong core and misses out with the aggressive shell.
