First Impressions
The Pyramid Pathogen X, released in November 2016, brings an aggressive solid option to Pyramid's value performance class. Visually, the ball stands out with its swirling color scheme in black, orange and silver, which the matte finish shows off particularly well. Inside works the proven New Era 139 Symmetric Core, specified with a 2.54 RG and a 0.032 differential (at 15 lbs). These numbers point to controlled rotation and keep the ball from burning up too early. The shell is the GPS Navigational Solid coverstock, finished at the factory with 2000-grit Abralon. This combination of matte solid cover and moderate core delivers noticeably earlier grab and traction compared to typical entry-level balls.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Pyramid Pathogen (Cyan/Silver), which has a polished surface, the Pathogen X gets into a roll much earlier on the lane and shows a rounder overall motion. Where the original Pathogen offers more length and reacts sharper at the breakpoint, the Pathogen X smooths out the reaction and eliminates surprises on wet/dry conditions. Compared with the Storm Match Solid, both balls operate in a very similar zone as controllable benchmark balls for medium oil. The Pathogen X often offers comparable performance at a more aggressive price point. Against an Ebonite Cyclone, the Pathogen X is clearly stronger in total hook and less prone to squirting through the oil.
On the Lanes
The Pathogen X is made for medium oil and fresh house patterns where a stable reaction is required. It works excellently as a first ball to read the lane, since it shows the transition gently and does not react abruptly to friction. Its strength lies in controlling the pocket: it lets you hold your line without having to fear an overreaction at the end of the pattern. If you throw at higher speed, the matte finish provides the help needed to get the ball into a roll early enough. Once the lane dries up significantly, though, you should switch to a polished ball to save energy for carry.
