First Impressions
Released in June 2017, the Storm Code Red adds a hybrid version to the highly successful Code series. Inside the ball spins the proven asymmetric RAD4 core, the same core that already made the Code Black a favorite. At 15 pounds this core delivers extremely dynamic numbers: a low 2.50 RG, a very high 0.058 differential and a 0.020 intermediate differential. Those figures stand for quick revving and massive flare potential. Wrapped around this technology is the legendary R2S Hybrid Reactive coverstock. Out of the box the ball comes with a 1500 grit polished finish, which gives it a shiny look and the typical Storm scent (cinnamon). The combination of this aggressive core and the proven R2S cover aims to pair the length of a pearl ball with the somewhat earlier read of a solid.
Comparison Compared directly to the Storm Code Black with its R2S Pearl cover, the Code Red offers a slightly earlier and more stable reaction through the midlane. While the Code Black is known for its extreme "skid-flip" character and reacts very abruptly to dry boards, the hybrid mix of the Code Red takes the smallest bit of edge off that without losing the aggressive base character. Compared to a benchmark ball like the Storm Phaze II (symmetric solid), the Code Red gets through the heads considerably more easily and creates a noticeably more angular move at the breakpoint. The Phaze II rolls earlier and rounder, while the Code Red saves its energy for an explosive entry into the pocket. That makes it an ideal complement when pure solids burn up too early and pure pearls feel too slippery.
On the Lanes The Code Red is most at home on medium to heavy house shots and becomes a weapon as soon as the transition sets in and you are forced to play deeper angles. Thanks to the strong asymmetric core it generates enough torque to come back to the pocket reliably even from steep angles. The R2S Hybrid surface helps get the ball cleanly through the heads, but provides enough traction not to overshoot the target when you catch a bit of oil. It is especially effective if you like to let the ball travel and depend on a strong backend hook to optimize carry. When stronger balls like the Storm Sure Lock start to feel "dead," the Code Red brings the necessary freshness and angle back into play.
