First Impressions
The Brunswick Fanatic BTU Pearl was released in July 2017 and continues the unique concept of the BTU (Better Than Urethane) series. Visually, the ball comes in a plain but modern combination of silver and purple. Technically, it differs fundamentally from typical reactive balls: it combines the dynamic I-Block Symmetric Core with a special pearl version of the BTU shell. At 15 pounds, the core delivers an RG of 2.540 and a high differential of 0.052. This combination of a core with high flare potential and a chemically tamed cover is unusual. While a high differential normally produces a strong change of direction, the BTU Pearl coverstock dampens that aggressiveness in order to simulate the smooth, controllable motion of urethane, but with the energy retention of reactive resin. The surface comes out of the box with a 500/4000 Siaair Micro Pad finish, which gives it a smooth feel and plenty of length.
Comparison Compared to the original Brunswick Fanatic BTU (solid), which was known for its extremely early and smooth motion, the pearl version offers noticeably more length through the heads. Where the solid BTU often started working already in the heads, the BTU Pearl glides effortlessly through the first several feet and stores its energy for a somewhat more defined move at the end of the pattern. Compared to true urethane, such as the Purple Hammer, the Fanatic BTU Pearl offers the decisive advantage of carry: since it is chemically reactive resin, the ball creates more entry angle and mixes the pins better instead of deflecting flat. On top of that, it doesn't push oil into the backend (carrydown), which is often a problem with urethane balls for the players who follow. Against a weak reactive ball like the Brunswick Rhino, the BTU Pearl is overall calmer and less prone to overreaction on dry lanes.
On the Lanes The ideal range for the Brunswick Fanatic BTU Pearl is dry to medium lanes as well as short oil patterns, where control is the top priority. It's the perfect solution if you love the look of urethane – no sharp hooks, but a smooth arc – yet get frustrated when urethane balls leave the corner pins (ringing 10s). Thanks to the pearl surface, it works excellently during transition, when the fronts of the lane have already dried up and even the dull BTU Solid would pick up too early. It lets you play the boards more directly and throw the ball up the boards without having to worry about it going through the nose. For tournament players it's a secret weapon on tricky sport patterns, since it combines the forgiveness of urethane with the hitting power of resin.
