First Impressions
The Storm Son!Q was released in February 2018 and added a more dynamic element to the popular IQ series within the Master line. Visually, the ball comes in an attractive color blend of blue, bronze and gold. The technical heart of the ball is the innovative Centripetal HD Core (High Density). This symmetrical core is based on the design of the original IQ core, but was modified to reach an even lower RG of 2.45 and a considerably higher differential of 0.047 (at 15 pounds). This quick-revving core is wrapped in the proven R2S Pearl Reactive coverstock, which ships from the factory with a 1500 grit polished finish. This combination promises a clean skid phase through the heads, followed by a stronger overall motion than in previous models of the series.
Comparison Compared to the legendary Storm IQ Tour Solid, the Son!Q offers a substantially more aggressive backend reaction and more overall hook thanks to the modified Centripetal HD Core and the pearl cover. While the IQ Tour Solid is known for its controlled, almost "dead" smoothness, the Son!Q practically bursts with energy as soon as it reaches friction. Compared with the Storm Phaze II, the Son!Q gets through the midlane cleaner and stores more energy for the breakpoint, while the Phaze II reads the pattern earlier and describes a rounder arc. Compared to the Storm Marvel Maxx Pearl, the Son!Q is a bit more angular and reacts more sensitively to the dry area, since the Marvel Maxx Pearl drives through the pocket somewhat more evenly thanks to the nanotechnology in its cover (NRG). Against the Roto Grip Hustle Ink, the Son!Q is a massive upgrade in terms of hitting power and board coverage, which makes it more of a high-performance ball for the transition than a pure option for drier lanes.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Storm Son!Q is on medium oil conditions, especially when the lanes start to transition (break down). Thanks to the extremely low RG, the ball starts to rev up very early, which gives you a high degree of predictability and stability despite the polished pearl surface. It is the perfect choice when a dull solid ball loses too much energy in the heads but you still need strong continuation through the pins. If you throw the ball fast, you'll benefit from the quick core rotation, which keeps the ball from "hanging up" at the breakpoint. Rev-dominant players appreciate the Son!Q's ability to play deeper angles without the ball jumping off the spot uncontrollably. On very heavy oil, however, the Son!Q may slide too far because of the R2S Pearl cover, which is why in those cases it comes into play more as a second ball after a dull model. In the pocket, the Centripetal HD Core delivers excellent carry and the characteristic Storm sound at pin impact, accompanied by its pleasant Ginger Snap scent. All in all, the Son!Q is a versatile powerhouse for bowlers looking for the DNA of the IQ series with some extra "kick."
