First Impressions
The Motiv Jackal Shred was released in May 2018 as an exclusive model within the Jackal series and is designed specifically for high oil volumes. The ball impresses with its solid, dark color scheme and visually signals its purpose for demanding lane conditions right away. Inside sits the Predator V3 asymmetric core, which in the 15-pound version comes in with a low 2.47 RG and a high 0.055 differential plus a 0.019 intermediate differential. This core architecture is built to rotate very early and generate a massive flare potential of more than seven inches. Wrapped around this power core is the Coercion HV2 Solid Reactive coverstock, a further development of the Coercion technology that provides maximum traction in deep oil. The factory finish is dulled with a 2000 grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) process, giving the ball a rough surface so it can move through the heads steadily and already bite hard in the midlane.
Comparison Compared to the legendary Motiv Jackal Ghost, the Jackal Shred offers even more overall hook and a slightly earlier reaction in the midlane thanks to the updated Coercion HV2 cover. While the Jackal Ghost is known for its controlled continuation, the Shred generates more friction under comparable conditions. Set against the Storm Phaze II, the Jackal Shred is clearly more aggressive due to its asymmetric core and covers more boards, whereas the Phaze II as a symmetric ball allows a rounder and more versatile line. Against the Radical Katana Dragon, the Jackal Shred shows a somewhat smoother change of direction at the breakpoint, but in return offers greater stability through the middle of the oil pattern. Compared to the Motiv Alpha Jackal, the Shred slots in just below it, since the Alpha Jackal with the HV3 cover represents another step up in surface aggressiveness. These comparisons make it clear that the Shred works as a specialized tool for extremely oily conditions where standard performance balls would often skid too far.
On the Lanes The ideal application for the Motiv Jackal Shred is on heavy oil patterns and long sport patterns where traction is the most important quality. The ball lets bowlers get a dependable read of the lane even on slick surfaces, since the coverstock material actively works against the oil film. If you throw the ball fast, the Shred is an indispensable companion for preventing an early "skid through" at the breakpoint and guaranteeing a solid entry angle into the pocket. Rev-dominant players, on the other hand, can use the ball to move deeper into the middle of the lane on patterns with extreme volume and still get enough response from the core. On typical house shots or lanes that are already broken down, the Jackal Shred should be used with caution, since the strong surface takes a lot out of the heads very quickly and the ball can therefore lose too much energy, which weakens carry. Once the transition sets in and oil spreads into the pocket, switching to a pearl model is advisable. For serious tournament players, however, this ball provides the security needed to stay in control at high oil volumes and post consistent results.
