First Impressions
Released in August 2018, the Brunswick Method is one of the most technologically significant balls of the year, since it (together with the Fearless) marks the introduction of DOT technology (Durability Optimization Technology). This innovation places the pin on the bottom of the ball, which eliminates cracking in the pin area and allows unrestricted layout options. Inside works the Magnitude 055 High Diff Core, a symmetrical core that is extremely powerful with a 2.499 RG and a very high differential of 0.055 (at 15 lbs). This core is wrapped in the Synthesis Hybrid Reactive coverstock. With a factory finish of 500/3000 Siaair Micro Pad, the ball in red/anthracite/deep blue has a matte look that promises a strong balance between traction and backend reaction. In addition, the DynamiCore outer shell provides improved hitting power in the pins.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Brunswick Magnitude 055 (solid), which used the same core type (albeit in a different density), the Method is considerably more versatile. While the Magnitude 055 rolled extremely early and was intended for the heaviest oil, the Method offers more length through the heads thanks to the hybrid cover, plus better energy retention for the backend. It is not a pure "snowplow," but distinctly more dynamic. Taking an outside comparison, the Method operates at a similar level to the Storm Phaze II. Both are extremely strong symmetrical balls. The Method, however, often comes across as a tick more aggressive in its change of direction than the very smooth Phaze II, which is due to the extremely high differential that, for a symmetrical ball, nearly scrapes the legal limit.
On the Lanes
The Brunswick Method is an ideal "benchmark ball" for medium to heavier oil patterns. It combines the best characteristics of solid and pearl balls: it has enough matte surface (3000 grit) not to slide out on streaks of oil, yet through the hybrid chemistry and the high flare potential it generates a powerful move in the back part of the lane. It is perfectly suited as a first ball on fresh lanes to read the conditions. When asymmetrical balls are too strong ("overhook") but weaker symmetrical balls don't hook enough, the Method is the answer. Thanks to DynamiCore technology and the strong roll phase, its carry is above average even at somewhat flatter entry angles.
