First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Storm PhysiX marks the introduction of an entirely new core design at Storm and immediately established itself as a benchmark product. At its heart is the asymmetric Atomic Core, which stands out for its extremely weight-distributed shape. With a very low RG of 2.48 and a high differential of 0.053 (at 15 lbs), this core is built to get into rotation extremely quickly and generate massive flare. This aggressive engine is wrapped in the NRG Hybrid Reactive coverstock. This shell uses the well-known nanotechnology (nano-spikes) to increase friction at the molecular level. The factory finish of 3000 grit Abralon gives the ball, in red, blue and purple, a matte texture that allows length while still showing real teeth in oil. The PhysiX was developed to close the gap between extreme "heavy oil" balls and polished backend monsters by combining midlane traction with backend dynamics.
Comparison
Compared directly to Storm's legendary Code series (e.g. Code Red or Code Black), the PhysiX shows a noticeably more "grown-up" and stable reaction. Where the Code balls with their RAD4 core often skid very far and then turn extremely abruptly ("skid-flip"), the PhysiX reads the midlane earlier thanks to the NRG shell and offers a rounder yet still very steep and continuous motion. It comes across as a more aggressive, asymmetric version of the Storm Phaze II: it offers a similar amount of safety in oil, but the Atomic core generates considerably more torque and entry angle at the breakpoint. Compared to a pure solid ball for the heaviest oil, such as the Roto Grip Halo, the PhysiX glides more easily through the heads and burns less energy, which leads to better carry when you have to play deeper angles.
On the Lanes
The Storm PhysiX is predestined for medium to heavy oil patterns and is considered one of the most versatile asymmetric balls of recent years. It shines especially on fresh lanes, where the 3000 finish gives it the hold it needs in oil without losing energy for the hit. Its strength is consistency through the transition: when the lane changes, the PhysiX stays predictable. It lets you open up the pocket and play from left to right (right-handers), since the core is strong enough to come back even from steep angles, while the hybrid shell keeps it from jumping uncontrollably the moment it contacts dry boards. It delivers exceptional carry because it rolls through the pins instead of deflecting, which makes it a first choice for tournament players and ambitious league bowlers.
