First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Motiv Trident Abyss redefines the upper limit for traction in the Motiv lineup. It was developed specifically to dominate on the heaviest oil conditions. At its heart works the proven asymmetric Turbulent core, which was already used in the original Trident. With a low 2.49 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs), this engine produces quick revving and massive flare. The real innovation, however, is the Coercion HV3 Reactive (High Volume 3rd Generation) coverstock. This solid cover is even more aggressive than the HFS blend of the Jackal Ghost and literally bites into the oil. The factory finish of 2000 grit LSS (Laser Scan Sanded) reinforces this effect and gives the two-tone gray-blue ball an extremely dull texture that creates hook the moment the ball leaves your hand.
Comparison
Within the lineup, the Trident Abyss positions itself as the strongest and earliest rolling ball Motiv had produced up to that point. It reads the lane even earlier than the popular Motiv Jackal Ghost and offers an overall smoother, heavier motion. While the Jackal Ghost often still shows a visible arc at the breakpoint, the Abyss acts more like a snowplow: it uses its energy almost exclusively for traction in the heads and midlane. Bringing in an outside competitor, the Abyss plays in the same league as the Storm Sure Lock or the Roto Grip Halo. It is the absolute opposite of the Trident Quest (pearl): where the Quest skids and snaps, the Abyss digs in and rolls. It is not designed for backend reaction, but for maximum control in deep oil.
On the Lanes
The Motiv Trident Abyss is a specialty tool for extreme conditions. Its territory is lanes with very high oil volume or very long patterns, where other balls simply slide out ("hydroplaning"). It is ideal if you throw the ball fast and need help getting the ball to start up early. On house shots it is often too much ("overkill") and will burn up energy too early, which leads to weak carry. On sport patterns, however, it is often the rescue ball for establishing a line on fresh oil and breaking down the edges. It smooths out the pattern by eliminating overreaction and delivering an absolutely predictable ball path. If you're looking for hook in oil, this is the maximum.
