First Impressions
Released in October 2018, the Storm Phaze Pink (officially known as the "Paint the Lanes Pink Phaze") is a limited special edition originally produced in support of breast cancer research. Technically, this ball represents a fascinating combination: it pairs the proven symmetrical Velocity core, familiar from the entire Phaze series, with the legendary R2S Hybrid Reactive coverstock. With a 2.48 RG and a 0.051 differential (at 15 lbs), the core provides an early rev-up, while the polished 1500 grit surface delivers easy length. This pairing is unique, since it combines the powerful engine of the Phaze with the versatile shell of the Hy-Road. Visually, the ball comes in two shades of pink, which makes it extremely eye-catching on the lane and immediately signals that it was built for length and backend reaction without sacrificing the control of a symmetrical core.
Comparison
Compared directly to the reference ball, the Storm Phaze II, the Phaze Pink is, as expected, noticeably longer and more angular. While the Phaze II reads the lane early with its sanded solid surface and creates a rounded, smooth motion, the Phaze Pink glides effortlessly through the heads and responds more quickly to friction at the end of the pattern. Bringing in the Storm Hy-Road, which uses the exact same R2S Hybrid shell, shows the influence of the core: the Phaze Pink reads the midlane noticeably earlier due to its lower RG (2.48 vs. 2.57 on the Hy-Road) and feels more stable in oil. It is more aggressive than a Hy-Road but cleaner than a Phaze II, which places it right in the gap between "benchmark solid" and "late-hook pearl."
On the Lanes
The Phaze Pink shines above all on medium oil patterns and becomes a weapon as soon as the lane starts to show transition. It is the ideal choice when a strong solid ball like the Phaze II begins to burn up energy too early and hits flat into the pins (poor carry). Thanks to the R2S Hybrid shell, you can move further left and open up the pocket, since the ball stores enough energy to come back powerfully even from steeper angles. It is more forgiving of an inconsistent release than many asymmetrical balls, and the Velocity core provides enough flare to still find traction in slightly deeper oil without jumping off the spot uncontrollably.
