First Impressions
Released in November 2018, the Brunswick Vintage Vapor Zone brings back one of the most iconic cores in bowling history: the Zone Asymmetric Core. This extremely low-RG core (RG 2.478, diff 0.048 at 15 lbs) is paired with the modern Activator Plus 2.0 pearl reactive coverstock. This reissue was specifically adapted to handle today's higher oil volumes, where the original would struggle. One decisive technical upgrade is the integration of DynamiCore technology, which increases the durability of the outer shell and noticeably improves energy transfer to the pins (carry). Out of the box, the ball comes with a 500 Siaair sand, then polished to a high gloss with Crown Factory Compound. The result is a visually striking ball in blue/purple pearl that skids through the heads and makes an aggressive, almost angular change of direction at the breakpoint.
Comparison
Compared to the original Vapor Zone, the Vintage version reads the lane somewhat earlier and responds more sharply to dry areas, which is due to the stronger base chemistry of the Activator Plus 2.0 shell. Looking at the competition, the Vintage Vapor Zone compares best to the Storm Code Black. Both balls are asymmetric pearls known for their skid-flip reaction. However, while the Code Black often describes a somewhat more continuous curve in the backend, the Vapor Zone shows the typical Brunswick characteristic: it "sets" harder at the breakpoint (hook-set) and then rolls massively through the pins. It is considerably more angular and quicker in response than symmetric pearls such as a Storm Hy-Road, which acts softer and rounder.
On the Lanes
The Vintage Vapor Zone is an absolute weapon on medium to lightly oily lanes, or for the transition phase once the fresh layer of oil in the heads has been played off. It is not the first choice for extremely long, fresh oil, since the polished surface could slide too far here (over-skid). Its strength lies in opening up angles: if you're forced to move left (as a righty) and give it more of the pocket, this ball gives you the confidence to throw it well out to the right and still come back with plenty of energy. It generates easy length and stores its power for an explosive backend, which makes it ideal if you need help kicking out corner pins when the lane gets demanding through the middle.
