First Impressions
The Hammer Web Aggressive Edition, released in February 2019 as an exclusive international (overseas) release, brings an exciting pearl variant to the Web family, even before the US market got the official Web Pearl. Visually the ball comes in a classy "Black Pearl / Purple Pearl" combination, brought to a high shine with a Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish. Inside works the proven Spheroid Core, a symmetrical core with a 2.48 RG and a 0.048 differential (at 15 lbs). This core is known for its low center of gravity, which helps the ball get into rotation relatively early without becoming uncontrollable. The decisive feature, however, is the Aggression Bite Pearl cover. This coverstock is designed to deliver the length of a pearl ball, but to generate a stronger reaction to friction than conventional pearls thanks to the "Bite" additive. As usual with Hammer, the outer core is carbon fiber infused, which increases durability and optimizes energy transfer to the pins.
Comparison
To place the Web Aggressive Edition correctly, it has to be compared to the Hammer Web Tour Edition, which appeared in the US during the same period. The Web Tour Edition uses a matte solid surface and a modified core with less flare, which results in an extremely smooth and gentle motion. The Web Aggressive Edition is the exact opposite: thanks to the polished pearl surface and the higher differential (standard Spheroid Core), it creates noticeably more length through the heads and a much sharper change of direction at the breakpoint. It moves more angularly. Compared to the original Hammer Web (hybrid), the Aggressive Edition is cleaner through the heads and stores more energy for the backend. Against an asymmetric pearl ball like the Hammer Black Widow Gold, the Web Aggressive Edition offers more control through the midlane. While the Widow Gold often reacts too "nervously" to friction, the symmetrical Spheroid core of the Web provides a more predictable reaction that is more forgiving of mistakes at the release.
On the Lanes
The Hammer Web Aggressive Edition is excellently suited to medium oil conditions and plays to its strengths once the lane starts to break down (transition). It is the ideal ball to follow a "Web Tour" or a strong solid ball as soon as those start to hook too early or burn up energy. Thanks to the polished Aggression Bite Pearl cover, the ball glides effortlessly over already dry heads and generates enough angle in the backend to allow deeper lines as well. It suits players who like the "skid-flip" look but prefer the security of a symmetrical core that does not tick out abruptly. On very heavy oil it could slide too far because of the polish, while on extremely dry lanes it may react too strongly when it hits the friction. It is an excellent benchmark pearl for tournament players who travel on international patterns.
