First Impressions
The Storm Phaze III presents itself visually as an attractive member of the Storm Master Line with its Obsidian/Jade/Orchid color combination. The ball uses the proven Velocity Core (14–16 pounds) with a 2.48 RG and a 0.051 differential at 15 pounds. The cover is the R3S Hybrid Reactive coverstock with a 1500-grit polished factory finish, which is recommended for medium oil conditions. The R3S coverstock represents the third generation of Storm's Reactor material and offers earlier lane read as well as a smoother overall reaction thanks to its increased porosity. The ball also received a Grapevine scent.
Comparison
Compared directly to the Phaze II, a clear difference shows up: while the Phaze II has a solid coverstock and reacts earlier on the lane, the Phaze III uses a hybrid coverstock and should react later in the backend. The Phaze III is described as the cleaner version of the Phaze II, offering the same motion on less oil. The hybrid cover smooths out the reaction, so the ball doesn't react as sharply as, for example, the Storm Hy-Road Pearl, but also not as early as the Phaze II. Compared to the Brunswick Prism Hybrid, both balls should be very similar, with the Prism Hybrid possibly coming out minimally stronger. The ball complements the Storm Gravity Evolve well.
On the Lanes
The Phaze III is less suited to fresh lane conditions, except on medium length or low oil volume, but it sees frequent use in the middle of tournament blocks and should be perfect for typical league play. It functions as the perfect transition ball from the Phaze II. The ball is clean through the heads and reacts responsively but not over-jumpy to friction, while it digs well in oil and should help combat lane issues on "wet/dry" or "edgy" conditions. It works on THS as well as on medium to heavy sport patterns and can be used on lanes with high friction or thin oil as well as on heavier oil volumes on slicker lanes. The ball proves useful on lane conditions with more left-right blend, but could become unpredictable on very wet/dry patterns.
