First Impressions
The 900 Global Afterburner presents itself as an affordable value candidate with a visually appealing design, available in two color options — Blue/Black and Purple/Black. The ball uses the Ignition Symmetric core with a low differential and the S62 Hybrid coverstock. On a 15-pound ball, the RG is 2.55 and the differential is 0.038. Both color versions come out of the box with a 1500 grit polished surface, and this S62 Hybrid cover is the strongest 900 Global has ever used on a value-priced performance ball.
Comparison
The Afterburner positions itself clearly above the previous 900 Global Boost series. It should show a stronger reaction than the previously released Boost balls. The new Ignition Symmetric core is a lower-RG, higher-differential design compared to the Nightfall core of the After Dark series. The Storm Furious, which paired the R2S Solid cover with the same core, was considered a particularly popular ball. In a direct comparison with the Purple/Black version, the Blue/Black variant shows more midlane motion and a more arcing reaction at the breakpoint.
On the Lanes
Both Afterburner versions are best suited to medium to dry lane conditions. With the 1500 grit polish, the ball gets to the outside boards without trouble and will run very long in oilier sections. Once it reaches friction, though, it develops a strong reaction that is characteristic of lightbulb cores with added flip. The Purple/Black variant should offer a more defined backend motion. Because of its characteristics, the ball can be prone to over/under reactions — if it reaches friction early, it hooks hard. For power players and tweeners, the ball offers a strong but predictable reaction on medium to dry lanes, while use on a fresh house shot will likely call for surface adjustments.
