First Impressions
The Roto Grip Hustle Hunter is a limited OEM release that was available exclusively in Europe in 14 and 15 lbs. The latest formulation of the VTC-S20 solid coverstock (VTC = Versatile Traction Control) was developed to provide more control and stability across the entire lane. The Hustle Hunter uses the proven Hustle Core with an RG of 2.53 and a low differential of 0.030. Roto Grip's R&D department saw the 3000-grit surface as an improvement in versatility for all player types. The matte solid surface gives the ball a professional look and should allow for a controlled ball reaction.
Comparison
Compared to the legendary Roto Grip Hustle INK, the Hunter revs up a bit earlier and stronger. The ball reaction resembles a Storm Idol at 1500 grit, with an early roll while still storing enough energy for the backend. Unlike the earlier, weaker reactive Hustle versions, the Hunter is by no means weak in overall performance. With the sanded VTC-S20 cover it should not read too early, while at the same time controlling the friction down the back of the lane. The solid formulation positions it as a stronger alternative to the pearl and hybrid versions in the Hustle line.
On the Lanes
The Hustle Hunter was developed to deliver performance for beginners and advanced bowlers alike, and is considered a benchmark for entry-level balls. The ball is ideal for light oil conditions or when the backends are very clean. The original Hustle Core design targeted overall performance in the entry-level price segment, with a focus on control and stability. The Hustle Core is laid out for balance, control and dependable performance on light to medium oil conditions. Bowlers with a variety of styles can benefit from the 3000 surface, which offers an even balance between traction and control. The historical significance of the Hustle Core is shown by the fact that in 2017 the 34th recognized 900 series in USBC history was shot with the Hustle INK.
