First Impressions
The Roto Grip RST X-1 Squad comes in an understated color scheme and follows a clear technical approach. The Squad uses the proven asymmetric RST Core as its foundation and pairs it with the new eTrax P20 Pearl coverstock. The new version of the eTrax Pearl cover contains a new chemical additive as well as ratio changes to create better traction in the midlane and more responsiveness to friction in the back half of the lane. The ball carries the same core numbers as the original RST X-1, with a 2.53 RG, a 0.053 differential and a 0.016 MB differential in 15-pound balls. The factory surface is delivered at 1500 grit polished, a noticeably smoother starting point than on the original RST X-1.
Comparison
Compared to other pearl balls, the Squad shows a continuous skid feel through the heads and strong roll out of the midlane, with its straighter performance boosted by the lower eTrax P20 Pearl surface without getting too aggressive on the backend. The character differs noticeably from the original Roto Grip RST X-1, which reads considerably earlier with the MicroTrax Hybrid at 3000 grit. Where the RST X-1 offers a rounder motion and continuous reaction, the Squad should generate more length through its pearl cover and then respond with a defined change of direction. Compared to the Storm Proton Physix, known for its aggressive stance, the Squad shows a more controlled and more predictable reaction in the back half of the lane.
On the Lanes
The RST X-1 Squad is best suited to medium to medium-dry lane conditions, where the pins should be taken out by the strong arcing motion on the backend. The polished surface makes the ball especially interesting if you need an option with more length as the oil volume goes down but still want to use the punch of the RST core. Thanks to the controlled backend reaction, the ball appeals to a range of player types — from power players looking for a less aggressive alternative to accuracy players who benefit from the predictable motion. The versatility of the eTrax P20 Pearl cover allows the reaction window to be varied further through surface adjustments. The ball positions itself as an ideal complement to stronger asymmetric options when the lanes dry up or when less aggressive hook shapes are called for.
