First Impressions
The Roto Grip UFO Alert comes in an eye-catching Purple Solid/Emerald/Teal color combination and was released in July 2021 as the successor to the original UFO. Technically it is built on the asymmetric E.T. Core (Equalizer Technology) with a 2.52 RG, a .054 differential and a .016 intermediate differential. As a special feature it uses the eTrax Hybrid Reactive coverstock with a factory-polished 1500 grit surface. The innovative E.T. core has integrated "Equalizer Cavities" that are meant to simulate the effect of a balance hole without an additional drilling, thereby providing more flare potential and better continuation through the backend section.
Comparison
The UFO Alert offers more length than both the Roto Grip Idol Synergy and the Rubicon UC2. Compared directly to the Storm Dark Code, the UFO Alert shows itself to be stronger, revving up earlier and with more forward roll. One user compares it to the Storm Incite, with the Alert running a bit longer and creating more angle on the backend. There are similarities to the Roto Grip Rubicon UC2 in terms of overall hook potential and midlane reaction, though the UFO Alert shows a more curved motion instead of the hockey-stick shape of the UC2. Compared to the original UFO, it differs through the pearl reactive coverstock instead of the solid reactive cover, which results in more angle on the backend instead of the rounder arc of the original.
On the Lanes
The UFO Alert was developed for medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. It performs well on 44 foot typical house patterns and suits bowlers of all skill levels. If you have less hand or higher speed, it can be especially valuable, since it helps get polished balls into a roll more easily. The polished factory finish can tend toward over/under reactions on fresh conditions, which is why some bowlers take the polish off and rework the surface with a 4000 pad. The ball offers good forgiveness on both sides of the target line while remaining strong but controllable. Its tendency to stand up quickly results in more hook potential and makes it a reliable companion for a variety of lane conditions.
