First Impressions
The Motiv Ripcord Velocity comes in an attractive Navy/Gold Pearl color combination and is the newest member of the successful Ripcord series. The ball is wrapped in the Infusion MVP Pearl Reactive coverstock, finished with a 5500 grit LSP surface. At its heart sits the symmetrical Oblivion core with a 2.53 RG and a 0.047 differential at 15 pounds. The dual-density Oblivion core is a complex piece of engineering and features a massive flip block that should make the Ripcord Velocity break off the oil pattern as explosively as possible. The improved Infusion MVP Pearl cover, based on the Fatal Venom technology, should provide easy length and explosive backend motion.
Comparison
The Ripcord Velocity slots in ideally between the Fatal Venom and other matte balls in the Motiv arsenal. The Velocity's traction tones down its backend just enough to place it below the Jackal Flash and Supra, while it is cleaner than both the Forge Flare and the Jackal Legacy yet still offers just as hard a direction change on the backend. Compared to Storm balls like the Rubicon UC2 or Zen, the Ripcord Velocity proves less reactive and therefore more controllable, much like other Motiv balls in the Ripcord series or the Fatal Venom. Against the original Ripcord, the Velocity is roughly 3-4 boards stronger and creates more angle on the backend.
On the Lanes
With its high RG and moderate differential, the ball is laid out for versatility on medium oil conditions. For rev-dominant players, the Ripcord Velocity should create exceptional angles that other players on the lane cannot match, especially when steep angles are called for. Balanced players benefit from the help through the heads and the angle through the pins, particularly on higher-friction surfaces where the front part of the lane is problematic. If you are speed-dominant, you can use the Velocity as your burn ball, since it offers more backend angle than anything else available. The ball is very clean through the heads and butter-smooth on the backend, while acting predictably and explosively at the breakpoint. It takes surface very well when needed and can be hit by hand with a 2000 pad to tame it for a full night of league.
