First Impressions
The Roto Grip RST X-2 shows up in a striking tanzanite look and features the asymmetric Roto Star Tour core. At 15 pounds it carries an RG of 2.53, a differential of 0.053 and an intermediate differential of 0.016. The ball uses the new eTrax Plus Pearl Reactive coverstock and comes out of the box polished at 1500 grit. This combination of asymmetric core and pearl coverstock should deliver characteristic length generation with a sharp backend.
Comparison
Compared directly with other high-performance balls, the RST X-2 shows some interesting differences. For many bowlers it represents an almost perfect blend of the RST X-1 and the Rubicon UC2. Next to the Storm Dark Code and the 900 Global Zen, those two proved to be about one arrow stronger, while the RST X-2 reacted in a more controlled fashion. The similarity to the UFO Alert is so slight that the two balls are rarely found in the same arsenal, but pairing it with the Rubicon UC2 makes plenty of sense.
On the Lanes
The RST X-2 is designed for medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. As a mid-range, defined arsenal option it works especially well when you move into the oil line, while a more direct line often leads to jittery ball reaction. The pearl cover makes it very clean through the heads and sharp in the dry, though it does need friction down the lane. It's an excellent option in particular if you prefer controllable ball reaction and don't primarily bowl on heavy oil, as well as for classic low-rev bowlers on house shots.
