First Impressions
The 900 Global Zen Master shows up in a striking color combination of magenta, black and green and is meant to expand the Zen series with a particularly strong version. The specs list a 2.49 RG, a 0.051 differential and a symmetrical core shape. The ball uses the familiar Meditate Symmetric Core from the original Zen in combination with the S77 Response Solid coverstock. The surface comes sanded to 3000 Abralon out of the box, which gives the ball immediate traction on the lanes. The Meditate core is described as the volumetrically largest core 900 Global has ever put in a ball, which should provide maximum hitting power and consistent reaction. Comparison
Compared directly to the original Zen, the Zen Master reads about 10-15 boards different in its reaction, with the combination of the S77 Response Solid cover and the 3000 surface reacting considerably stronger. Several testers compare the ball reaction to a stronger version of the Storm Phaze II or the Axiom, though the Zen Master shows a more continuous motion. The comparison to the Storm Phaze II is also drawn, but with somewhat less backend motion from the Zen Master. Some even see it as a replacement for the legendary Roto Grip Idol. Another tester compares the original Zen to the Roto Grip MVP Pearl, which makes it easier to place the series within familiar reaction patterns. On the Lanes
The Zen Master was developed specifically for heavy oil volumes and medium to heavy oil conditions and represents the strongest symmetrical option in the current 900 Global lineup. Bowlers who need earlier and stronger hook motion in particular should be well served by this ball. The ball needs enough oil volume to develop its length before it unleashes one of the strongest motions in bowling today. On fresh house patterns it can serve as a benchmark ball, and it shows very good performance on medium oil volumes. For tougher and shorter sport patterns it offers the necessary control, while if you have a high rev rate or bowl two-handed you'll benefit from its controlled motion, since it doesn't jump too hard off the dry. The continuous motion lets you stay with the ball for several games even as lane conditions change, before a move to weaker options becomes necessary.
