First Impressions
The DV8 Medusa presents itself as an extremely eye-catching piece in black, yellow and gold, and like the figure from Greek mythology it's meant to turn the competition to stone. Technically, the ball is built around an asymmetric Medusa core with a 2.516 RG at 16 pounds and a 0.042 differential. The coverstock is the Inciter Max Flip Pearl Reactive that already appears on the DV8 Hell Raiser Return. The surface is prepped with 500/1000/1500 SiaAir and then finished to a shiny polish with Crown Factory Compound. The ball features DV8's patented Durability Optimization Technology (DOT) as well as DynamiCore technology for added durability and improved pin action.
Comparison
The Medusa core delivers lower RG and differential numbers than balls from the DV8 Hell Raiser and Warrant lines. Compared directly to the DV8 Hell Raiser Return, the Medusa proves more aggressive, since you can start two boards further right on fresh lane conditions. That characteristic fills an important gap in the current DV8 lineup. While many pearl balls only react late down the lane, the Crown Factory Compound polish makes the breakpoint happen a bit earlier than on typical skid/flip balls, though that can be corrected with surface adjustments. The combination of lower RG and the pearl cover clearly sets it apart from stronger symmetric options like the Storm Phaze II or more aggressive asymmetric balls like the Roto Grip Halo.
On the Lanes
The DV8 Medusa is a perfect fit if you need clean length through the heads and want an extremely angular backend reaction. While the ball was originally designed for medium to heavier oil volumes with a skid/flip motion, it shows its strengths especially on medium to lighter oil volumes and on broken-down patterns. Strokers benefit from the strong backend move on fresh medium patterns, and the ball still offers enough recovery when you play further out. Through transition the Medusa keeps its strong backend motion, even once the heads start to hook. The ball should carry its energy through the pins very well and keep them low, which maximizes carry. Ideal scenarios are medium lane conditions for rev-dominant players, or as an option for speed-dominant players on lighter conditions.
