First Impressions
The 900 Global Reality Dark Knight presents itself as the pearl version of the proven Reality series, visually combining a striking color mix of magenta, aqua and midnight blue. The S84 Response cover, with its special chemical composition that creates up to 20% larger pore size, has been finished to a 1500-grit polished surface. The Disturbance Asymmetric Core uses a modified scutoid geometric shape. This eccentric shape has a base with 6 sides and a top with 5 sides. The ball was approved by the USBC on October 19, 2021.
Comparison
The Reality quickly became known as a ball that was a big asymmetric ball but didn't really act like one. It was surprisingly clean and responsive for a 900 Series ball. Compared directly to the original Reality, the Dark Knight version should show noticeably different characteristics. The Reality, even though it was a cleaner matte ball, is still very strong through the front part of the lane. The Altered Reality will clear the heads much more easily and save more energy for the back part of the lane. The Hammer Black Widow 3.0 Solid would be more versatile based on the recommended lane conditions of medium to heavy oil compared to heavy oil conditions for the other two balls. The Reality is a step up into the high-performance category and is best on heavier oil, while the RG Idol Pearl & Storm Phaze II would be less aggressive.
On the Lanes
The Dark Knight version is aimed primarily at players looking for a pearl reaction with increased traction. Even though the surface is a pearl and polished, the larger pore size allows more traction in oil than traditional pearl surfaces. This property makes the ball especially interesting for medium to heavier oil volumes, where conventional pearl balls often reach their limits. Because of the enlarged microscopic pore size, this surface will be clean through the front part of the lane, as a pearl should be, but will also dig into the oil, whereas other pearl surfaces tend to struggle with that. The ball should be particularly well suited if you're looking for a controllable backend reaction with a strong midlane read but still value the cleanliness of a pearl surface through the heads.
