First Impressions
The Brunswick Defender, released in March 2022, steps up as heavy artillery for lots of oil. Visually, its matte three-color shell in Navy, Purple and Sky marks it immediately as a pure "hook monster" ball. Inside works the newly developed Portal X Core, an asymmetric core with very strong numbers: a low 2.473 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs) deliver early revving and plenty of flare. This is complemented by an intermediate differential of 0.015, which provides a defined asymmetry without becoming uncontrollable. The cover is the A.C.T. 3.0 Solid Reactive coverstock (Activator Composite Technology), finished out of the box with a coarse 500/2000 Siaair surface to ensure maximum traction in oil.
Comparison In direct comparison, the Defender positions itself as a modern evolution of the Brunswick Zenith series. It offers more overall hook and stronger continuation through the pins than the original Zenith. Compared to the segment leader, the Storm Proton Physix, the Defender revs up similarly early, but often feels a bit more continuous on the backend and less "stopping" at the breakpoint. It is more aggressive in oil than a Brunswick Mindset (hybrid/pearl versions) and offers more traction than a symmetric benchmark ball like the Knock Out Black and Blue. Another good outside comparison is the 900 Global Reality: both balls are big asymmetric solids for lots of oil, with the Defender often perceived as a touch rounder and smoother in its motion.
On the Lanes The Defender is clearly designed for heavy oil and fresh lane conditions. It's the first ball you pull out of the bag when you're playing on a "flood" of oil or looking for something to hold up on long sport patterns. Its strength lies in the ability to dig through heavy oil and still save energy for the pins. It works excellently if you have a lot of speed and need help getting the ball to turn over, or in situations where you have to "blend" the lane to avoid overreaction on a dry backend. Once the heads start to dry up, though, you should switch to a ball with more length, otherwise the Defender will burn up energy too early.
