First Impressions
Released in May 2022, the Columbia 300 Power Torq Pearl is the direct answer to the huge success of the original Power Torq Solid. Visually, the ball stands out with its regal "Purple/Gold/White" color combination. The technical heart remains the symmetrical Torq Core. With a low 2.489 RG and a high 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs), this core is one of the strongest symmetrical engines in the Columbia lineup. It provides quick revving up and plenty of flare. The new element is the Reflex Pearl coverstock. While the original relied on a dull solid base, this version uses a pearl formulation that is finished at the factory with 500/1000/1500 Siaair and then polished to a high gloss with Crown Factory Compound. This configuration aims to pair the traction of the strong core with the length of a smooth surface.
Comparison
The most important comparison is to the Columbia 300 Power Torq Solid. The Solid is a classic benchmark ball that rolls early and moves in a round shape. The Power Torq Pearl, by contrast, is noticeably cleaner through the heads and reacts far more aggressively to friction at the breakpoint. It is the perfect "step-down" option. Compared to a ball like the Storm Phaze V, the Power Torq Pearl shows a slightly earlier and more stable rotation in the midlane due to its lower RG value (2.48 vs. 2.55), while the Phaze V skids farther. Against an Ebonite Game Breaker 4 Pearl, the Power Torq Pearl offers more overall dynamics, since its core has a higher differential (0.054 vs. 0.048), which leads to more backend motion and a steeper angle into the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Power Torq Pearl shines on medium oil and in situations where the lane has already gone through transition. It is not a ball for a flood of oil, where it would skid, but it is also not a ball for bone-dry lanes, since the strong core could otherwise jump too early. Its ideal range is where strong solids like the Power Torq or a Storm Phaze II start to lose energy ("burn up"). The Pearl lets you move your feet inside and play bigger angles across the boards. The polish provides the necessary skid, while the Torq Core makes sure the ball does not arrive "flat" at the end of the pattern but goes through the pins with plenty of energy (carry).
