First Impressions
Released internationally in May 2022, the Hammer Black Widow Real Monster Solid is the logical next step in the extremely popular "Real Monster" series for the Asian market. Visually, the ball keeps to a menacing, almost entirely black look (often with a subtle sparkle) that fits the name perfectly. Under the hood sits the unmistakable Gas Mask Core (RG 2.50, diff 0.058, int. diff 0.016 at 15 lbs), the hallmark of the Widow line. The key change is the Neoflex 25 Solid Reactive coverstock. While many Widows rely on the Aggression cover, this ball uses Neoflex technology, which provides a somewhat different chemical traction. Out of the box, the ball comes with a rough 2000 Siaair Micro Pad finish, which signals unmistakably: this ball is built to create traction.
Comparison
The direct point of comparison is the previously released Hammer Black Widow Real Monster (Pearl/Hybrid). While the original Real Monster is known for its length and explosive backend snap, the Real Monster Solid reads the lane considerably earlier. It gives up some of the angular backend motion in exchange for substantially more stability and overall hook through the midlane. Compared to the Hammer Black Widow 2.0 (Aggression Solid), the Neoflex 25 cover often makes the Real Monster Solid feel a tick more aggressive in the way it digs into the oil, producing an even heavier roll phase. It is stronger than a Web Tour, but the asymmetric core gives it more definition at the breakpoint than typical symmetric solids.
On the Lanes
The Black Widow Real Monster Solid is a first-rate choice for medium-heavy to heavy oil. It serves as the "traction anchor" in the bag. When you're playing fresh oil and the backend is still tight (slick), this ball gives you the security you need because it won't drive through the breakpoint. It smooths out the reaction on the lane ("blend the pattern") and prevents the dreaded over/under effect. Thanks to the Gas Mask core, it retains enough energy despite the early read to mix the pins powerfully. It is less suited, however, when the heads are dry; in that case it would burn up too early and arrive flat in the pocket.
