First Impressions
The Ebonite Polaris Hybrid immediately catches the eye with its color combination of teal, navy and orange. Inside works the technically refined Polaris core, which has one characteristic feature: a special body at the bottom end that lowers the RG and provides stability. At 15 lbs this asymmetric core delivers a 2.479 RG, a 0.048 differential and a 0.018 intermediate differential. These numbers point to a strong engine that wants to get going early. The cover is the GSV-3 Hybrid Reactive coverstock. Unlike the original solid ball, however, the Hybrid ships with a finish of 500, 1000, 1500 Siaair and Crown Factory Compound. This polished surface lets the ball glide noticeably cleaner through the heads and store its energy for a more explosive move at the end of the pattern.
Comparison
The logical comparison is the original Ebonite Polaris Solid. Where the Solid, with its rough surface, was a "snow tire" for heavy oil that read the lane very early and described a smooth arc, the Hybrid is livelier. It gets through the heads effortlessly and reacts noticeably sharper and more angular at the breakpoint than its predecessor. Compared with the Track Paragon Hybrid, the Polaris Hybrid often comes across as somewhat rounder and more controllable in the midlane, while the Paragon tends to snap even more aggressively off the backend. Against a Storm Nova, the Polaris Hybrid shows a slightly earlier core reaction, but thanks to the compound surface it keeps enough length not to burn up.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite Polaris Hybrid is ideal for medium to heavier oil patterns, especially once the lane has already gone through some transition. It's the perfect step-down ball if you started with a dull solid (like the Polaris Solid or the Aero) and that ball begins to hook too early or lose carry. The polish carries it over the already dry areas of the heads without wasting energy, while the strong asymmetric core makes sure it doesn't slide in the oil of the midlane. It lets you open up the angles and play from inside out, developing enough power off the backend to mix the pins well even at flatter entry angles.
