First Impressions
The Pyramid Fortress (often referred to as the Fortress Solid) is a sight you simply cannot miss on the lane: it is completely pure white ("White"). This color is extremely rare for solid balls, since dirt and belt marks show up immediately, but it does have a functional advantage: you can see the oil rings (flare) better than on just about any other ball. Technically, it is built around the SG 19.5 Dual Density Asymmetric core. At 15 lbs, this delivers a 2.52 RG, a 0.043 differential and a 0.011 intermediate differential. For an asymmetric ball these numbers are fairly moderate and geared toward control. The cover is the GPS Nav Solid coverstock, finished at the factory with a 2000-grit Abralon sanding. This combination produces a ball that, despite the rough surface, does not grab right at your feet but instead gets surprising length before moving into a controlled arc.
Comparison
Compared to modern "heavy oil monsters" like the Roto Grip Gem or the Storm Proton PhysiX, the Pyramid Fortress behaves noticeably tamer and longer. That comes down to the higher RG (2.52 vs. roughly 2.47 on those balls). This is not a ball that plows through a flood; it is more of a "medium-heavy" specialist. Set against the Pyramid Blood Moon Rising (hybrid/pearl), the Fortress offers a much earlier but softer reaction. It has no snap in the backend, instead rolling heavy and continuous. In character it resembles a Storm !Q Tour Solid, but the asymmetric core gives it a bit more torque as it drives into the pins, without showing the typical touchiness of strong asymmetrics.
On the Lanes
The Pyramid Fortress is an excellent benchmark ball for medium to demanding oil conditions. Its white color is a fantastic training tool, because you can see exactly how the ball rotates, when it grabs and where it is running through the oil. In play, it shines through predictability: it smooths out over-reacting backends and offers a stable line to the pocket on fresh oil. It is ideal if you are looking for a ball with a sanded (solid) surface that has not burned all its energy after 20 feet. Once the lane gets very dry, however, or if you have to play extreme angles, the Fortress will feel too sluggish; at that point you should switch to balls like the Blood Moon Rising Pearl.
