First Impressions
The Ebonite The Wolf Pearl (released October 2022) is an homage to Ebonite's golden era and brings back an absolute classic in modern dress. Visually it stays classy in a "Gunsmoke / Silver Pearl" color that looks very clean and elegant on the lane. Technically, Ebonite pairs retro feel with modern performance: inside works the symmetric Thrasher core. It stands out with a very high RG of 2.530 and a moderate differential of 0.040 (at 15 lbs). Those numbers practically scream length. The core doesn't want to get going early, it wants to carry the rotation far down the lane. The cover is the legendary Powercoil 18 Pearl Reactive coverstock, polished with a compound finish. This combination creates a ball that glides effortlessly through the heads ("skid") and only shows a defined reaction at the end of the pattern.
Comparison
Compared directly to the popular Ebonite Game Breaker series (e.g. the GB4 Pearl), the Wolf Pearl behaves completely differently. Where the Game Breaker balls have low RG values and read the midlane early, the Wolf Pearl almost ignores that area entirely. It is noticeably longer and snappier off the backend than a GB4. Measured against the "light oil" market segment, such as the Roto Grip Hustle Camo or Wine, the Wolf Pearl plays in a very similar league. Because of the Thrasher core, though, it often looks a touch longer through the heads than the Hustles, which (depending on the cover) sometimes grab a bit earlier. It's the little brother of the "The One" series: where the "One" is built for heavy oil and arc, the "Wolf" is there for speed and length.
On the Lanes
The Ebonite Wolf Pearl is a specialist for light to medium oil conditions and dry lanes. It's the rescue ball when the heads are burned up and stronger balls already start hooking right at your feet or lose energy. Thanks to the high RG value it glides safely across those dry zones and saves its power for the pins. It works excellently for the late games of a league session or a tournament, when you're forced to move well inside but the ball still needs length so it doesn't go through the nose. It's also a first-class choice if you throw the ball at slower speed, since it helps you get the ball further down the lane without rolling out too early.
