First Impressions
The Storm !Q Tour Galaxy (an overseas release that caused quite a stir in early 2023) continues the legendary !Q series with an interesting combination. Visually, the ball comes in a deep "Cobalt / Blackberry" blend that looks very classy on the lane and usually carries the classic "Grape" scent. At the heart of the ball works the unmistakable C3 Centripetal Control Core. With a low 2.49 RG and a 0.029 differential (at 15 lbs), this symmetric core is the very definition of stability and control. The real standout feature is the shell: here Storm uses the NRG-2 Pearl Reactive material. Unlike typical "skid-flip" pearls, this nano pearl material is designed to generate a certain amount of traction already in the midlane despite the polished 1500-grit surface (Polished Finish), rather than simply sliding across the oil.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the Storm !Q Tour Ruby, which was popular at almost the same time, the Galaxy differs noticeably in its coverstock material. While the Ruby with its R2S Pearl shell goes extremely clean through the heads and reacts very sharply on the back end, the !Q Tour Galaxy reads the lane earlier thanks to the NRG-2 Pearl cover (a nano technology) and offers a rounder, more controlled motion. It acts as the "link" between the classic Storm !Q Tour Edition (solid) and the shiny pearls. Compared to a stronger ball like the Storm Phaze V, the Galaxy is considerably calmer and less prone to overreacting on wet/dry conditions. It provides more traction in oil than a Storm Hy-Road Pearl, but goes longer than a Phaze II.
On the Lanes
The Storm !Q Tour Galaxy is an excellent problem solver on difficult lane conditions. Through the combination of the very controlled C3 core and the nano pearl shell, it is perfectly suited to defusing so-called "wet/dry" conditions (lots of oil in the middle, dry outside). It doesn't slide too far when it hits the oil, but it also doesn't bite too aggressively when it encounters friction. That makes it a first-rate choice for tournament players on medium oil patterns who put control ahead of maximum hook. It is ideal when the lane begins to change (transition) and you need a ball that holds the line without breaking off unpredictably at the breakpoint.
