First Impressions
The Storm Perfect Lock is a sought-after International Release from February 2023 that revives the legendary Lock series with the latest technology. Visually, the ball stands out with its striking color combination of Turquoise, Violet and Black, and it carries the "Fruit Trifle" scent. Inside works the iconic asymmetric RAD-X core, which comes in with a 2.48 RG and a 0.054 differential (at 15 lbs) plus an intermediate differential of 0.018. This core is famous for its extremely high flare potential and its early revving. This proven engine is paired with the GI-21 Solid Reactive coverstock (Game Improvement 2021). Out of the box the ball comes with a 3000-grit Abralon finish, which gives it noticeable traction ("teeth") without burning up all of its energy in the heads. These specs clearly mark it as a heavy-oil specialist that builds rotation early and looks for a continuous motion.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original **Storm Lock** (which used the GI-15 hybrid shell), the Perfect Lock reads the lane noticeably earlier. Where the original Lock often generated more length thanks to its hybrid character and polished finish and turned the corner more sharply at the breakpoint, the Perfect Lock offers a rounder, more stable motion in oil due to the GI-21 solid shell and the matte finish. Compared to the **Storm Sure Lock** (GI-17 Solid), the Perfect Lock often looks a touch cleaner through the heads, but grabs just as forcefully in the midlane. Bringing in a current heavy-oil ball like the **Roto Grip Gem**, the Perfect Lock often shows a somewhat stronger backend motion (continuation) thanks to the RAD-X core; the Gem rolls extremely early and can roll out, while the Perfect Lock carries its energy a bit better through the pins. It plays more aggressively than a **Storm Phaze II**, since the asymmetric core provides a more defined change of direction.
On the Lanes
The Perfect Lock is the ultimate weapon for fresh oil and long, high-volume patterns. It absolutely needs oil in the front part of the lane (heads) to show its strengths. On dry or already broken-down lanes it will rev up too early and lose power. It works excellently as the first ball out of the bag in tournaments or league play on "flood" conditions. If you throw the ball fast, you'll appreciate how reliably the ball slows down and starts to hook, while if you have a lot of rotation, you'll enjoy the control the ball offers in oil. It smooths out overly sensitive backends by moving the reaction up into the midlane. Once the lane breaks down, though, it's time to switch to a hybrid or pearl (like the original Lock or the Trend).
