First Impressions
The Storm DNA marks the start of a new era for heavy-oil balls in the Storm lineup and was released in March 2023. Visually it comes in a powerful combination of Black, Red and Cardinal. The real star, however, is what's inside: the new asymmetric Supercoil core was developed to pair an extremely low RG (2.47 at 15 lbs) with a high differential (0.053) and intermediate differential (0.023). These numbers force the ball to rev up very early. This core is wrapped in the EXO Solid Reactive coverstock, which comes out of the box with a coarse 2000-grit Abralon finish. This combination provides massive traction and keeps the ball from skidding too far on oily lanes. As is typical for Storm, this ball also carries a scent, in this case "Strawberry Sponge Cake".
Comparison
Compared directly to the **Storm Proton Physix**, which it replaces in many bags, the DNA is similarly aggressive in oil but shows a somewhat different shape of motion. Where the Proton Physix sometimes stopped almost abruptly at the breakpoint and rolled into the pocket, the DNA offers a slightly more continuous motion through the pins thanks to the Supercoil core, without giving up the early read. Compared to the **Roto Grip Gem**, both play in the "super heavy oil" category. The Gem often reads the lane a touch earlier and feels a bit more sluggish off the backend, while the DNA, despite its strength, saves a little more energy for the move past the breakpoint. Against a **Storm Phaze II**, the DNA is clearly stronger, handles considerably more oil volume, and creates a more defined entry angle through its asymmetry.
On the Lanes
The Storm DNA is a pure specialist for heavy oil and long, fresh sport patterns. It's the ultimate solution for the start of a tournament when the lanes are still swimming in oil ("flood"). Its dull 2000 surface practically digs into the heads and keeps the ball from shooting past the breakpoint. It works exceptionally well if you throw the ball fast and need help getting the ball to start rolling early. As soon as the heads dry up or the lane breaks down (transition), however, the DNA will quickly lose too much energy and roll out. At that point, a switch to a polished hybrid or pearl is mandatory.
