First Impressions
Announced in June 2023 and released shortly thereafter, the Motiv VIP ExJ Sigma is the newest model in the signature line of PBA superstar EJ Tackett. Visually, the ball comes in a shimmering combination of Berry, Black and Silver Pearl, giving it a very classy appearance. Technically, this ball marks the return of the legendary Sigma core, a symmetrical weight block with a very low RG of 2.47 and a differential of 0.047 (at 15 lbs). This core is known for its early revving and its compact rotation. Motiv pairs this controlled core with the Dynamic Infusion Pearl Reactive coverstock that already proved successful on the Iron Forge. Finished with an extremely smooth 5500 grit Laser Scan Polished (LSP) surface, the VIP ExJ Sigma is designed to generate length through the heads very easily without losing control in the midlane.
Comparison
Many bowlers view the VIP ExJ Sigma as the perfect pearl complement to the legendary Motiv Venom Shock. While the Venom Shock (solid) reads early with its Gear core and rougher surface and describes a very round shape, the VIP ExJ Sigma uses a similarly specced low-RG core but pushes the breakpoint noticeably farther downlane thanks to the pearl shell and polish. It is considerably longer and more angular than the Venom Shock. Bringing in the Storm Phaze V as a direct competitor, the VIP ExJ Sigma shows a tendency to rev up slightly earlier due to its even lower RG value (2.47 vs. 2.48), but at the breakpoint it often feels a tick more controllable and less "whippy." Compared to the Motiv Supra Rally, the Sigma core offers noticeably more midlane stability and doesn't react quite as extremely to over/under conditions.
On the Lanes
The VIP ExJ Sigma is an excellent ball for medium oil conditions and especially for the transition phase. It's ideal when benchmark balls like the Venom Shock or the Pride start hooking too early or losing energy. Thanks to the low RG of the Sigma core, the ball rolls stably enough not to slide past the breakpoint, while the polished pearl shell stores enough energy to hit the pocket powerfully even at bigger angles. It suits players who like to stand farther inside and throw the ball right (or left) to let it come back. The combination of early core roll and late cover reaction creates a very confidence-inspiring motion that offers both length and forward drive (carry).
