First Impressions
The Motiv Top Thrill Hybrid immediately catches the eye with its two-color pink and silver design, which gives it a modern, sporty look. Inside works the proven Halogen V2 core, laid out for a very high RG of 2.59 and a low differential of 0.023 (at 15 lbs). Technically, those core numbers point to an extremely late revving up and a controlled flare potential. This core is paired with the Turmoil XP2 Hybrid Reactive coverstock, a further development of the previous Top Thrill covers. The surface comes out of the box with a 5500 grit Laser Scan Polish (LSP) finish, which provides maximum length through the heads and a clean skid phase. The hybrid cover is meant to strike a balance between the pure skid of a pearl and the traction of a solid cover.
Comparison
Comparing the Top Thrill Hybrid with its direct line partner, the Motiv Top Thrill Solid, reveals a clear difference in the shape of the motion: while the solid reads earlier and describes a rounder, almost banana-shaped curve, the hybrid generates more length and reacts more angularly to the friction at the end of the lane. Compared to a classic entry-level ball like the Storm Tropical Surge, the Top Thrill Hybrid often offers a somewhat more defined move in the backend, since the Halogen V2 core retains enough dynamics despite the low flare numbers to still create sufficient carry even at steep angles. It is less a pure beginner ball and more a specialized tool for specific conditions.
On the Lanes
This ball is an absolute specialty weapon for dry lanes or heavily played-in conditions ("burn"). When stronger balls are already losing energy in the heads or jumping too hard off the breakpoint, it's time for the Top Thrill Hybrid. It works excellently for tournament players who have to react late in the block to a transition where the heads of the lane are dry but movement is still needed in the backend. If you throw the ball at lower speed, it's often the first choice for generating enough length at all on drier house shots. It ignores the first several feet of the lane almost completely and saves all of its energy for the pocket.
