First Impressions
Released in September 2023, the Storm Absolute Pearl expands the Premier Line with a technically fascinating option that was originally designed for the international market. Visually, the ball comes in a striking color combination of "Copper," "Midnight," and "Electric Blue," which makes rotation easy to read on the lane. As is customary with Storm, the sensory experience is rounded out by a "Fruit Pop" fragrance. At the heart of the ball works the innovative Sentinel™ Core. This asymmetric core is distinguished by its unique construction, in which the mass is concentrated at the ends of the core, which should minimize the need for balance holes. With a 2.48 RG and a 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs), the core provides strong torque, while the intermediate differential of 0.021 was deliberately kept moderate. This is meant to keep the ball from reacting too abruptly to friction and instead to promote a continuous motion. The decisive change from the original Absolute lies in the cover: here the EXO™ Pearl Reactive coverstock is used. This shell is chemically more aggressive than the R2S variants and has already been used successfully on balls such as the Exotic GEM from Roto Grip. The surface is polished with Reacta Gloss at the factory, which helps the ball get through the heads cleanly without completely sacrificing traction in the oil.
Comparison
In a direct comparison with the original Storm Absolute (released in January 2023), the pearl version shows a more pronounced differentiation on the backend. While the original Absolute produces a very round and controllable motion with its R2S Deep Hybrid shell, the EXO Pearl cover of the Absolute Pearl delivers a quicker response to friction. The EXO coverstock is stronger in its basic chemistry than R2S Deep, which means the Absolute Pearl should have a higher overall hook potential than its hybrid predecessor despite the polished pearl surface, provided there is enough oil on the lane. An interesting comparison arises with the Exotic GEM from Roto Grip. Both balls use the EXO Pearl cover. The difference here lies massively in the core: the Sentinel Core of the Absolute Pearl provides more length and a smoother motion through the transition than the extremely early-rolling Defiant LRG Core of the Exotic GEM. The Absolute Pearl thus positions itself as the cleaner, backend-oriented alternative if you like the cover of the Exotic GEM but are looking for a ball that gets to the pocket later. Compared to the popular Storm Virtual Energy Blackout (VEBO), the Absolute Pearl is somewhat rounder. The VEBO (with R2S Pro Pearl and Shape-Lock Core) tends toward a sharp, almost "snappy" reaction at the breakpoint. The Absolute Pearl, on the other hand, uses the low intermediate differential of the Sentinel core to create a motion that is angular but should mask the over/under effect better on difficult lanes. It reads the midlane a bit earlier than a VEBO but retains enough energy for the hit in the pocket.
On the Lanes
The Storm Absolute Pearl is predestined for medium to heavy oil conditions where you already need some help getting the ball through the front boards. Thanks to the EXO Pearl cover, the ball generates enough traction in the oil not to blow past the breakpoint, while the polish and the pearl additives ensure the necessary energy storage for the backend. Ideal use cases are often found in the second or third game of a series, when the lane begins to dry up in the heads (transition) but there may still be carrydown on the backend. This is where the Sentinel core plays to its strength: it maintains its rotation for a long time and provides a strong drive through the pins, even when the entry angle gets steeper. For strokers and if you have a lower rev rate, the ball offers the advantage that the EXO cover is strong enough to grab even at higher speeds. Power players and two-handers will appreciate that the ball does not burn up too early despite its strength, but instead maintains an impressive backend motion. It allows you to play deeper angles and open up the lane without having to worry that the ball will arrive in the pocket without power. The Absolute Pearl thus serves as an excellent step-down from strong solids (such as the Eternity Pi from 900 Global or the Absolute Power) when those start to hook too early.
