First Impressions
The Storm Marvel Blast (released September 2023) presents itself as a powerful extension of the legendary Marvel series, developed specifically for the international market. Visually, the ball comes in a striking black and purple (Black/Purple) color combination that develops an eye-catching shine on the lane thanks to the factory 1500-grit polished finish. As is customary with Storm, this model also has its own scent, specified here as "Fruit Pop." Inside works the proven Centripetal™ Symmetric Core, which forms the heart of the Marvel line. This core is characterized by a very low 2.48 RG and a high 0.050 differential (at 15 lbs), giving it an extremely low center of gravity. This core is paired with the NRG™ Pro Pearl Reactive coverstock. That material choice is significant, since the NRG Pro cover bridges the gap between pure pearl length and the traction needed in oil, which positions the ball technically well above standard entry-level pearls.
Comparison
To place the Marvel Blast's performance in context, a direct comparison with the iconic Storm Marvel Pearl (cover: R2S Pearl) is essential. While both use the identical Centripetal core, the NRG Pro Pearl cover on the Marvel Blast makes it read the lane earlier and produces a somewhat rounder motion compared to the often very snappy R2S Pearl of the original. As a result, it behaves more stably in oil. Another important point of comparison is the Storm Phaze Ruby. Both balls use the identical NRG Pro Pearl cover, but they differ in the core (Velocity Core in the Phaze vs. Centripetal in the Blast). The Marvel Blast tends toward an even more controlled motion through the midlane here, since the Centripetal core has a tendency to get into rotation and stand up very quickly without losing the energy it needs to drive into the pocket. Compared to the 900 Global Zen (S77 Response Pearl), the Marvel Blast is less angular at the breakpoint and offers a smoother transition, which makes it the safer choice on jumpy backends.
On the Lanes
The ideal use case for the Storm Marvel Blast is on medium to heavy oil house patterns as well as during transition phases on sport patterns. Thanks to the polished NRG Pro Pearl cover, the ball generates enough length through the heads, but the nanotechnology additives in the coverstock (NRG) make it bite earlier in the oil than conventional pearls. That makes it a perfect choice if you find the "skid-flip" effect of classic pearl balls too unpredictable. The Marvel Blast should deliver a predictable reaction as soon as it reaches the friction at the end of the pattern. It works excellently as a first ball change when strong solids (like a Storm Phaze II or Roto Grip Gem) lose energy too early or hook too much. For tournament players it offers the control needed to "blend the wet/dry" and handle difficult transitions between oil and dry boards without giving up carry.
