First Impressions
The Storm Hy-Road Flash, released in September 2023 as an international release, expands the legendary Thunder line with an aesthetically striking and technologically potent option. Visually, the ball comes in a color combination of black and aqua (Ultramarine), giving it a "jewel of the deep sea" appearance on the lane. Inside works the proven Inverted Fe² Technology core that defines the entire Hy-Road series. This symmetric core is characterized by a high RG of 2.57 (at 15 lbs) and a differential of 0.046, which physically produces natural length through the heads. The distinguishing feature of this model is the "R2X Pearl Nano" coverstock. This chemical composition is a more aggressive evolution of the classic R2S shell and has been given a nano additive here. Out of the box, the ball comes with a 1500-grit polished finish, which brings out the shine and maximizes the skid phase.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Storm Hy-Road (hybrid), the Flash gets noticeably cleaner through the front part of the lane thanks to its pearl cover and the polish. While the original Hy-Road is known for its round, bank-like arc, the Flash should generate a sharper change of direction at the breakpoint. The distinction from the Storm Hy-Road Pearl is interesting: although both balls are polished pearls, the Flash uses R2X material instead of R2S. The R2X coverstock has a higher baseline traction (footprint) in oil. Combined with the "Nano" additive, the Hy-Road Flash should read the midlane a bit earlier than the classic Hy-Road Pearl, without sacrificing the typical skid-snap motion. In performance terms it therefore sits slightly above the standard Hy-Roads, comparable to the reaction of a Storm Hy-Road Wave or a Roto Grip Attention Star S2, albeit in a lower performance class than the high-performance balls.
On the Lanes
The ideal use case for the Hy-Road Flash is on medium oil conditions and typical house shots, once the lane shows the first signs of transition. Thanks to the high RG, the ball should glide effortlessly through burned-up heads and save its energy for the backend. The nano pearl component should help minimize squirt in the oil if the ball does find longer oil, which makes it somewhat more forgiving than pure "glass" pearls. You can use this ball to move deep left and play the dry boards on the outside (hook from deep inside), since the core and the shell store enough energy to ensure excellent carry even at steeper entry angles into the pocket. It works ideally as the first ball change when stronger solids (like a Storm Phaze II) start to hook too early or lose energy.
