First Impressions
The Roto Grip Idol MPW (Magenta/Purple/White), released in October 2023, marks another evolution in the legendary Idol series. Visually, the ball stands out with its striking color blend of magenta, purple and white, which makes it instantly recognizable on the ball rack. Technically, Roto Grip relies here on the proven combination of the Ikon™ core and the chemically aggressive XtremeTrax™ Solid coverstock. With a low RG of 2.49 and a high differential of 0.052 (at 15 lbs), the symmetric Ikon™ core provides the physical basis for the core revving up early. The surface comes out of the box with a 2000-grit Abralon finish, which opens the pores of the coverstock and should deliver maximum traction in the heads and through the midlane. These specs clearly position the Idol MPW as a "benchmark" ball for oily conditions where control and an even release of energy are the priority. It is designed not to react only at the end of the lane, but to read the lane early in order to create a predictable curve.
Comparison
Compared directly within the product lines, the Idol MPW shows strong parallels to the *Roto Grip Idol Helios*. Both use the XtremeTrax Solid technology, chemically altered to create more friction in oil than the original MicroTrax formula of the original Idol. Against the classic *Storm Phaze II* (a direct competitor among symmetric solid balls), the Idol MPW should rev up somewhat earlier and show a rounder, less angular move at the breakpoint. Compared to asymmetric balls such as the *Roto Grip Gem* or the *900 Global Reality*, the Idol MPW behaves more controllably and less drastically in its change of direction, yet still offers more overall hook than weaker symmetric balls like the *Roto Grip Hustle M-M*. While a *Roto Grip Attention Star S2* is designed more for the transition and a later reaction, the Idol MPW serves as the ball you pull out of the bag first to read the lane. It offers more safety than pearl versions because it minimizes skid in the oil.
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the Roto Grip Idol MPW is fresh oil patterns with medium to high oil volume. Thanks to the rough 2000-grit surface and the strong core, it works excellently to defuse the "wet/dry" problem (too much oil in the middle, too dry outside). The ball should slow down the transition of the lane by picking up the oil in the heads and allowing a smooth line into the pocket. It is particularly effective if you like to let the ball roll and prefer a continuous motion rather than counting on a late, abrupt hook. On drier lanes, or once the heads are already played out, the Idol MPW could lose energy too early (burn-out), which would hurt pin carry. In that case a switch to a polished ball would be necessary. In summary, the Idol MPW is the tool for stability and control while the lane is still "fresh" and demanding.
