First Impressions
The Roto Grip Attention X, released in November 2023 as an International Release (Overseas), shows up in a striking color combination of Emerald, Dark Emerald and Black. Unlike its later-released counterpart, the Attention Star, the Attention X goes for raw traction instead of shine. The surface comes in a box finish with a strong 2000-grit Abralon sand, which immediately signals that this ball was designed to read the lane earlier. Technically, Roto Grip combines the proven asymmetric Momentous™ core with the aggressive Hyper-Response™ Solid Reactive coverstock here. With a 2.50 RG and a 0.053 differential (at 15 lbs), the core offers plenty of flare potential. One particular feature is the comparatively low intermediate differential of 0.011. That number suggests that while the ball has the power of an asymmetric, its reaction through the transition should be more controlled and less "rough" than with extreme high-end asyms. The Hyper-Response solid cover should make the ball grab already in the midlane rather than sliding across the oil film.
Comparison
Compared directly to the popular Attention Star from Roto Grip (February 2024), the Attention X behaves noticeably rounder and earlier. Where the Attention Star generates length with its pearl surface and Reacta Gloss finish and then turns hard at the end of the lane, the Attention X is the controlling counterpart: it reads the boards earlier and offers a smoother arc through the pocket. Bring in stronger balls like the Gem or Reality (also Roto Grip/900 Global) and the Attention X slots in just below them. Because of the lower intermediate differential (0.011 compared to ~0.016+ on the "big" asyms), it doesn't react quite as aggressively to friction, which makes it more versatile. It's less a "snowplow" for absolute oil floods and more a strong benchmark ball that closes the gap between the big tanks (like the Gem) and the benchmark symmetrics (like the Phaze II).
On the Lanes
The Roto Grip Attention X finds its ideal place on fresh oil patterns and at medium to higher oil volume. It's the perfect choice as the first ball out of the bag to read the lane. Thanks to the 2000-grit surface, it smooths out the pattern and prevents the dreaded "over/under" behavior, where the ball sometimes reacts too early and sometimes not at all. If you throw the ball fast, you'll appreciate the traction, since the ball shouldn't slide through the breakpoint. For bowlers competing on sport patterns, the low int-diff value of the Momentous core offers a decisive advantage: the ball stays predictable. If the lane gets tougher over the course of the series as it dries up (transition) and the Attention X starts losing too much energy in the heads, switching to a shiny ball like the Attention Star or an Exotic Gem would be the logical next step to maintain hook and carry.
