First Impressions
The Storm Summit Peak presents itself as the logical evolution of the popular Summit and introduces the innovative TX-23 Pearl reactive coverstock to the product line for the first time. Visually, the ball immediately stands out with its striking Goldenrod, Mint and Iridium color scheme, accompanied by the typical Storm fragrance "Apple Kiwi Pie". Inside works the proven Centripetal HD - A.I. core. This symmetrical construction uses "Amplified Inertia" (A.I.) technology, in which a thinner outer shell of the core shifts the weight further toward the outside. The result is an extremely low RG of 2.46 (at 15 lbs) and a very high differential of 0.056. These numbers suggest that the ball should get into a roll very early and has massive flare potential. Out of the box, the Summit Peak comes with the Reacta Gloss finish, which helps it glide cleanly through the heads without completely masking the aggressive nature of the core.
Comparison
Compared directly to the original Storm Summit (which uses a hybrid/solid blend), the Summit Peak is noticeably cleaner through the first few feet of the lane. While the original Summit tends to read the lane early and create a round, even motion, the Peak stores its energy longer. Compared to classic "clean pearls" like the Hy-Road Pearl or the IQ Tour Ruby, however, the Summit Peak is substantially stronger and reads the midlane more aggressively. In terms of performance it sits above the Storm Journey, since the stronger core and the more aggressive TX-23 Pearl coverstock give it more hook potential in oil. You could view it as the link between the big sanded solids (like the Phaze II or the Summit) and the polished balls for drier lanes. It offers more length than a Phaze II, but a distinctly earlier and stronger reaction than a Zen Gold Label from 900 Global.
On the Lanes
The ideal application for the Summit Peak is medium to heavy oil conditions, especially once the lane has broken down a bit (transition). Thanks to the Reacta Gloss finish, the ball gets through burned-up heads well, but grabs very decisively in friction thanks to the TX-23 Pearl blend. It works excellently if you like to open the lane up a little more to the right (for right-handers) without having to worry about the ball sliding at the breakpoint. The low RG makes sure the ball doesn't wait until the very last few feet to react, but instead makes a controllable yet angular move into the pocket. When "benchmark" balls like the Phaze II start to hook too early or lose energy, the Summit Peak is the perfect switch option to maintain the hook while improving the entry angle to the pocket and optimizing carry.
