First Impressions
The Radical ZigZag marks a technological milestone in the Radical Bowling Technologies lineup and introduces a newly developed core system. Visually, the ball comes in a striking color scheme of black, silver, and lime, which shows exceptional clarity and color brilliance thanks to the HK22 - HyperKinetic Hybrid coverstock. Inside works the namesake ZigZag Asymmetric Core. With a 2.501 RG, a 0.045 differential, and a 0.015 intermediate differential (at 15 lbs), the specs aim at a versatile yet dynamic motion. The surface comes out of the box with a complex finish (500, 1000, 1500 Siaair / Factory Compound), which helps the ball get through the heads cleanly before it releases its energy. What sets this core apart is the patented development method, which is designed to noticeably lengthen the hook window — the area in which the ball makes its change of direction — instead of only producing a short, violent reaction.
Comparison
Within the Radical product line, the ZigZag positions itself as the more dynamic complement to balls like the Outer Limits. While the Outer Limits (also HK22 Hybrid) is often perceived as somewhat rounder and more controllable, the ZigZag should offer a sharper reaction at the end of the oil pattern thanks to the new core. Compared to Radical's Bigfoot Hybrid, the ZigZag generates noticeably earlier and stronger torque due to its asymmetric nature, without sacrificing length. Across the market, the ZigZag fits into the category of shiny asymmetric balls, similar to the Virtual Energy Blackout from Storm or the Attention Star from Roto Grip. In direct comparison to those competitors, the ZigZag aims to react less "nervously" to friction. Instead of extreme skid/flip behavior, which on some balls in this class can lead to unpredictability, the ZigZag was built to deliver plenty of backend while spreading that motion over a longer distance down the lane (continuous motion).
On the Lanes
The ideal scenario for the Radical ZigZag is medium to heavy oil conditions where the lane is already showing some transition. Thanks to the hybrid cover and the Factory Compound, it gets through the heads effortlessly and stores its energy for the backend. It's an excellent fit if you find that your strong solids lose energy too early (burn up), but your pure pearls still react too sensitively to excess oil. Because of the medium intermediate differential (0.015), the ball also stays manageable if you don't have an extremely high rev rate, since it doesn't jump the moment it first contacts dry boards. For sport bowlers it's a strong option for opening up the pocket once the oil pattern has broken down and deeper angles are required. The ZigZag should help increase the entry angle while maximizing carry through the pins, since it doesn't deflect but instead continues its roll phase powerfully through the pin deck.
